ALBUTEROL (PROVENTIL, VENTOLIN)
From CRS EMS Guidelines
Class
Sympathomimetic (B2Selective)
Pharmacology and Actions
- Has selective beta-adrenergic stimulating properties resulting in potent bronchodilation.
- Rapid onset of action (under 5 minutes), and duration of action between 2 - 6 hours.
Indications
- For relief of bronchospasm in patients with obstructive airway disease (asthma, emphysema, COPD) or allergic reactions.
Contraindications
- Symptomatic tachycardia
- Known hypersensitivity to drug
Precautions
- Albuterol sulfate has sympathomimetic effects. Use with caution in patients with known coronary disease. Monitor pulse, blood pressure, and cardiac monitor, in CAD patients.
- When inhaled, albuterol sulfate can result in paradoxical bronchospasm, which can be life threatening. If this occurs, the preparation should be discontinued immediately.
Administration
- For nebulizer use only
- For adults and children: place 2.5 mg/3mL albuterol into an oxygen-powered nebulizer and run at 6-8 LPM. Deliver as much of the mist as possible by nebulizer over 5-15 minutes.
- Endotracheally intubated patients may be given albuterol sulfate by attaching the nebulizer in-line.
- Patients placed on CPAP may be given albuterol sulfate by attaching the nebulizer in-line.
Side Effects and Special Notes
- Monitor blood pressure and heart rate closely and contact medical control if any concerns arise.
- Medications such as MAO inhibitors and tricyclics may potentiate tachycardia and hypertension.
